WHAT IS NIL?

NIL is the abbreviation for Name Image and Likeness and refers to the new rules for NCAA athletes’ ability to profit from the use of their name, image, and likeness. Previously this was seen as a way to be a professional athlete; therefore, not allowed. Now, athletes can use photos of themselves or allow others to use images of them or their names to promote things while adequately compensating the athlete.

“Likeness” is included to allow for the use of digital versions of the athletes, such as for video games. Before, video game companies were not allowed to make visual copies of the players on games because they couldn’t pay the players for it/buy their likeness.

NIL rules are a way to compensate college athletes in a fair way for the market they produce by being athletes that others want to use, and consumers want to see. Think of it similarly how many pro athletes have sponsorships with many different companies and that NIL is now letting college athletes do that as well.

WHAT IS FLAGSHIP?

Flagship is the University of Arkansas’ all-encompassing solution to enable Arkansas student-athletes to fully capitalize on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) as permitted by the NCAA on July 1, 2021. Working with University of Arkansas student-athletes as it pertains to NIL is subject to all rules, guidelines, and regulations from the university, in addition to NCAA rules.

More information on specific rules related to working with Razorback student-athletes can be found online.
